ANTIQUE MIDDLE EASTERN BOWL, COPPER & SILVER INLAY, DAMASCUS SYRIA LATE 19TH C. This antique Middle Eastern bowl is of distinctive shape and tapers inwards towards the rim. It was made in Syria in the late 19th century in the Mameluk Revival style. The bowl has been well crafted: it is made of copper with pieces of silver inlay to the border at the rim and three bands of very nice silver ornamentation encircling the body. The bottom and top borders feature a complex geometric braid of silver with knots. The deep border to the centre contains three panels of calligraphy interspersed by panels of floral and foliate ornament. Areas of the inlaid silver have also been chased, adding further interest and texture. The calligraphic inlay was a particularly difficult process for the craftsmen and these panels show a good command of this art.
There are some areas of damage (please study the photos) but despite this, the bowl has genuine age and shows fine craftsmanship. Ultimately, Syrian art is vanishing at an alarming rate as a consequence of the hostilities, so grab this lovely bowl while you can. Size Height 10cms; Width 16cms.
