A Must for Collectors Of Cairoware , Mamluk Revival , Persian & Islamic Art in General. The technique of silver and copper inlay was revived in the late 1700's and 1800's in the Islamic world. The process is difficult and requires several stages of mastery. Indeed after the item has been cast or hammered into shape it is then covered in the calligraphy and patterns. After this difficult stage the brass/bronze is carved & engraved by hand. Finally the silver and copper is hammered into the carved areas. A beautiful silver inlaid tray from Damascus which on close inspection has fish circulating in the center.
Thick heavy feather style of inlay has been used in the medallion. Going away from the center are Arabic calligraphic cartouches which are surrounded by the typical birds used in Syrian work.
