Giulio Rosati antique middle eastern painting Italian orientalist art watercolor
This is an original signed pencil and watercolor painting depicting two Bedouins meeting in the desert. The color and detail are superb. Giulio Rosati specialized in eighteenth century costume pieces from the life of Orientalist subjects. This painting on watercolor paper measures 10 3/4 by 15 1/2. It is framed in a 16 by 20 frame and matted to 9 1/4 by 13 1/4.

This is an amazingly beautiful painting with an interesting provenance. 1917 was an Italian painter who studied painting at the Academy of Rome. Working mainly in watercolor, and sometimes in oil, Rosati focused nearly his entire painting career on Orientalist art, and was part of a large group of painters at the time, who were depicting similar Middle Eastern subjects.

This was a time of greater accessibility to the Middle East, and even though Rosati himself never went, he was able to create his images using photographs, literature, engravings, Oriental carpets, clothes, and objects brought back from travelers. Orientalist painting became increasingly popular among American and British collectors toward the end of the 18th century as souvenirs of their exotic travels.
