Huge Islamic Tray Silver Inlay Mamluk Cairoware Bordered Arabic Calligraphy 71cm
Spectacular (28 inches) Islamic Brass Tray Inlaid with Silver & Copper Adorned with Rare Copper Bordered Silver Calligraphy , Central'Reesh' Style Thick silver work with Birds, Surrounded by Four Calligraphic Cartouches , All against a background of Superbly Engraved Foliates , Flowers Interlaced geometric patterns and detailed with Arabesques and Repetitive Patterns. A Must for Collectors Of Cairoware , Mamluk Revival , Persian & Islamic Art in General. The technique of silver and copper inlay was revived in the late 1700's and 1800's in the Islamic world. The process is difficult and requires several stages of mastery. Indeed after the item has been cast or hammered into shape it is then covered in the calligraphy and patterns.

After this difficult stage the brass/bronze is carved & engraved by hand. Finally the silver and copper is hammered into the carved areas. Another superlative tray from my own collection.

This has the rarer silver large calligraphic cartouches which in turn are surrounded with copper wire. This is a very rare form of metal inlay and is usually done on some of the best pieces. Although also done by the master silversmiths of Cairo, this type of work was usually done in Damascus and the Reesh (feather) style of work in the center , almost 100% Syrian work , reinforces this point. If you are a collector of silver inlaid pieces you will have noticed that the larger trays are becoming very scarce indeed. Anything over 70cm is seldom seen nowadays. THIS IS A LARGE & HEAVY TRAY!! MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE ROOM TO DISPLAY IT!! Please see all the 12 ENLARGED pictures. 28 inches (71 cm) diameter. Please look at all pictures to truly appreciate the beauty of this item!
