Very Rare Monumental Pair of Mamluk Revival Vases i nlaid with Silver & Copper. Adorned with Tendrils Some Of Which Terminate Into Bird's Heads , Arabic Calligraphic Cartouches and Arabesques.A Must for Collectors Of Cairoware , Mamluk Revival , Persian & Islamic Art in General. Early 1900's Cairo / Damascus. The technique of silver and copper inlay was revived in the late 1700's and 1800's in the Islamic world. The process is difficult and requires several stages of mastery.
Indeed after the item has been cast or hammered into shape it is then covered in the calligraphy and patterns. After this difficult stage the brass/bronze is carved & engraved by hand. Finally the silver and copper is hammered into the carved areas. Engravings ON the silver AS WELL as the brass. Not many like this around These probably date to around early part of the 1900's.
Please see all the 12 ENLARGED pictures. A few small dents in the body which are not easy to see. The midriff of the bases differing slightly in shape. One vase spherical in the midriff the other ovoid.Nothing distracting and expected in the hand-made nature of the items. 15 inches (38 cm) High; 9 inches (23 cm) Widest point.
