This is a really unusual and very old antique that came from an amazing estate in Pennsylvania. It is very heavy and made of bronze with ornate decoration and inlaid glass balls. On the top that has the decoration there is a floral design and in the very center is some Arabic writing which I do not know what it says. On one side there is a hammer and the other side has a steel blade embedded into the bronze. I have also seen a Turkish coffee hammer which was used to crush the bean with one side and then to finally chop with the blade, so it also could be that type of tool. It measures 11.5 long.
The hammer part to the edge of the blade is 5.5 long. The blade is 2-7/8 wide. Overall condition is really great. There is one screw on top that was probably a rooster and it looks like one end is broken off.
There is also a bronze nut on each side that turns but I'm not sure what the purpose was. It is definitely into the 1800s at the newest but it could be quite a bit older than that. It has a nice old patina but I think many, many years ago it was probably polished so this piece could be hundreds of years old.
A really amazing and unusual piece of utilitarian art. Please ask if you have any questions.
