19th Century Yemeni Jambiya Janbiya Dagger Hilt Leather Scabbard

An antique Yemeni asib janbiya or jambiya dagger from the late 19th century. Its hilt (handle) is made of bone and decorated with copper coins, silver dots and intricate granulation - all of which are combined into a beautiful ornament.

The double edge blade has an etching ornament at the top, close to the hilt. The sheath is made of wood covered with leather, which is also decorated with a geometrical design and leather threads called'tarsha. Given its age, the dagger and especially the leather scabbard show expected wear, please look at the pictures carefully. Length of the dagger in scabbard: 13 (33 cm). Length of the dagger itself: 12 (30.5 cm). Length of the hilt: 4 (10 cm). Width of the blade (average): 2.3 (5.8 cm). Weight with the scabbard: 10.5 (298 gr). A janbiya (also spelled jambiya and janbia) is a short curved dagger worn by men in Yemen. The janbia was given its name because it is worn on the side of a person, and the word comes from the Arabic'janb' which means'a side. This dagger has a long celebrated history. There is historical evidence that some of the oldest janbiyas were worn in Sheban times, in the Himiarite kingdom: a statue of the Sheban king from 500 B.

An interesting note is that the janbiya's leather scabbard is designed in way that reveals its wearer's tribal affiliation. When being held vertically against an imaginary clock face, the tip of the curve may point to 7 o'clock or 9 o'clock. The former indicates the Bakil tribe affiliation. If the tip points to 9 o'clock - as with this dagger - it signals that its wearer belonged to the Hashid tribal confederation.
