Up for sale is this. A big beautifully detailed bronze bird sits atop of the perfume applicator that would be dipped down into the perfume container and removed to be swiped across the neck, wrists, or anywhere the perfume was desired. This is truly a piece of ancient artwork created by a skilled metalsmith, with 8 birds surrounding the perfume container body and another 4 birds at the base of each leg.
Specialized metal craftsmen produced luxury items such as this mainly for the ruling and aristocratic elites as such items were out of financial reach of the working class. During the 2nd millennium metallurgists were already fairly well-versed in the bronze casting process both by mold and wax, an integral part in their artistic production in bronze.
This piece was recently unearthed in central Afghanistan having surely at one time been handed down between generations of mothers to daughters. Thank you very much for looking.
