Antique Copper Coffee Pot Pitcher Ewer Dallah Arabic Middle East 18-19th century
This very old traditional bronze Arabic Coffee Pot / Ewer called Dallah (Arabic - coffee pot) comes in a very elegant shape. Elongated bulbous pear shaped body with flat bottom, ornate raised handle, pear shape flippable lid with the flower decoration on top of the lid finishing with an elegant ribbed handle, classical beak-like outsize spout. The upper part of the body is decorated with three rows of engraved diamond-shaped ornaments. The rims of the lid and the upper body part are also engraved with tiny lines of beads.

The lid top has an ornate engraved five-petal flower. Is a traditional ewer for serving coffee in Arabic countries, since the middle of the XVIIth c. Coffee can be both prepared and served from dallah, or it can be moved to dallah to serve in front of the guests. Dallahs design is inherently practical. The flat bulbous bottom ensures the weight of the contents can stabilise the vessel if it is placed in the desert sands, or on a bed of embers.

The lid sits heavily on the rim to avoid spillage during pouring, while the height, shape, and size of the spout acts to minimise the flow of sediment. The dallah is also an object designed for visual and tactile enjoyment. The handle is usually curved in an attractive manner and is pleasing to hold, while the shape of its body echoes the feminine form. The spout evokes the crescent moon that is an icon of Islamic imagery.

Rich households displayed large numbers of dallahs lined up by the kitchen fire. As objects of ostentation, designed to send a message from the host to the guests. Arabic coffee is ingrained within Middle Eastern and Arab culture and tradition, and is the most popular form of coffee brewed in the Middle East. It originated in Yemen, spread to Mecca, Egypt, Levant, and in the mid-16th century, to Turkey and from there to Europe.

Arabic coffee is an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Arab states confirmed by UNESCO. Condition report: signs of wear consistent with the age, Scratches on the spout and the body. 12 in / 30 cm. 7,6 in / 19 cm.
