The young man in the orange outfit in carrying a bottle of wine in one hand and in the other is his Dastar (handkerchief). Dastar was a special handkerchief which was used both for fashion and for cleaning the mouth after drinking wine. Dastar had important meaning and role in Persian poetry and art. Wine was symbol of intoxication and love for the beloved and Dastar was a sign of purity and sanitation. The gold illuminated accents in the outfits of the figures, facial features, Chinese inspired rolling clouds and trees are all indications of the Safavid painting tradition.
Pomegranate and Dastar (Persian Wine Handkerchief) are the Persian elements of the Safavid style of miniature paintings as well as the floral illuminations and decorations.
