Antique Persian Papier Mache Lacquer Qalamdan Scribes Box People on Horseback

A 19th century Persian papier mache scribes box (Qalamdan). It features a black ground and is painted with flowers and people on horseback. To the sides are birds amongst flowers and there are also patterns. The box slides apart to reveal the compartment as is usual for these items.

The interior is plain black. The lacquer has rippled in places causing a surface texture which hides some of the clarity of the paint below. There are some knocks to the top and the end going through the surface into the material below.

There are some losses of the paint in places. The pictures give a pretty good sense of the overall condition.
