The spice box appears to be made primarily of copper that has been embossed with floral decorations, scrolling motifs and other decorations and then tinned. The handle and latching mechanism in the front appear to be made of heavy brass or bronze. Over the years, it may have been polished, removing most of the tin surfaces and exposing the copper underneath. This actually gives it an attractive look as most of the interior pieces still remain with shiny polished due to not being exposed to air as the outside surfaces are.
There is a removable tray when you first open the box that has many of the same decorations as seen on the top lid. Beneath this tray are five compartments with lids that are removable as seen in our photographs. The complete spice box with tray is very heavy, weighing approximately 3 lbs, 5 ounces. This was acquired at an Antique Collector's Fair over 25 years ago and we have only had it displayed on a side table or shelf during our ownership. We are making changes in our home and need to find it a new owner! A wonderful addition to any collection of exotic boxes! Please take the time to carefully examine all the photographs for more details. The spice box measures approximately 5-1/2" in height to the top of the raised handle and 3-1/2" to the top surface of the lid.
It measures approximately 8" in width x 6" deep. The box weighs approximately 3 lbs, 5 ounces. All measurements are approximate, but close. We carefully examined this item. There is a slight dent on the lid nearest the right flower towards the latched side. This is difficult to see in our photographs but not distracting.
There is a short 1/4'break' in the metal tray's edge as made, but we mention it for accuracy. The latch and hinge are both in good working order.
All parts (lids, compartments and tray) appear to be present. Overall wear is noted to the tinned lined surfaces from previous polishing.
Scratches noted on the bottom of the box. If you are expecting absolute perfection, you should consider something newer.
