Antique Turkish Ottoman Islamic Naval Janissary Silver Sword Yatagan Very Rare. Antique Turkish Ottoman Islamic Naval Janissary Silver Sword Yatagan Very Rare Possibly Made in 1804. Superb quality antique circa 1800 A.

Silver mounted, Turkish Ottoman Islamic sword Yatagan (Yathaghan) most likely custom made for a high rank officer of the Naval Janissary corps. DETAILS: The silver hilt with characteristic Karabela form pommel is completely clad in thick silver sheet, worked in repousse and finely hand chased, in low relief with scrolling foliage rococo shells and flowers in typical Ottoman Rococo pattern and stamped on the spine with 2illegible silver hallmarks (please see the photos).

A large recurved single edged blade finely hand forged of Damascus steel, with a watered pattern encased at the forte in shaped solid silver panels and deeply struck with an Ottoman sword smith's mark with Arabic letters and most likely a date 1218. Below a panel adorned with martial trophies including spears cannons and banners, the lover part of the scabbard repousse, and chiseled with fort gate surmounted with the crescent moon flanked by two towers with two cannons on the front all amidst scrolling foliage , rococo shells , flowers and garlands in typical Ottoman Rococo pattern.

The other face of the scabbard embellished on the upper and the lower part with two panels with a fort gate surmounted with the crescent moon flanked by two towers with two cannons on the front and the panel repousse, and chiseled with large eight-pointed star Rub el Hizb (rub al-izb) all amidst scrolling foliage, rococo shells, flowers and garlands in typical Ottoman Rococo pattern. The upper section of the scabbard is adorned with very finely hand-woven silver bands and ribbing and fitted at the spine with a small loop for suspension cord or tassel. The end of the scabbard chiseled with fish scales terminating in a finial in the form of a see monsters head. The scabbard is stamped in three places with illegible silver hallmarks (please see the photos). Absolutely beautiful museum quality Yatagan (Yataghan), silver mounts finely hand repousse, chased and engraved, in low relief , a truly artwork of Islamic Ottoman Goldsmith.

It was completely comprised of Christians forcibly converted to Islam. They serve as the infantry and the naval forces in Ottoman Navy.

One of a notable Janissary officer was the 17th century naval commander and Grand Vizier Khalil Pasha, of Armenian origin, who acts of courage have been glorified in the annals of Ottoman history. The Janissaries serve on board of the Ottoman ships for centuries. In the early 19th century Serving aboard a corsairs ships was an obligation for the Janissaries in Algiers militia.

Width of the blade at the widest point: 3.8 cm (1.5 inches). Thickness of the blade spine: 7.32 mm (0.29 inches).

Total weight of the sword with scabbard: 1.265 kg 2.789 lb. Weight of the scabbard: 593 grams (20.92 ounces).

CONDITION: with signs of age and usage, the hilt including panels has some minor splits caused by age and old repair but is sound and solid.
