Exceptional Antique Islamic Astrolabe Brass

All photographs are part of the description. Here is a beautiful antique astrolabe from the Middle East. It measures 7-7/8 inches overall from the bottom to the top of the hanger ring, and is 4-1/2 inches wide. It comes with one extra disk inside. It is beautifully engraved with Arabic numbering and lettering, and drawn pictures of the zodiac and other purely decorative designs.

The piece that is reticulated, which I will call the cover, is all hand cut, and in addition to the traditional globe shapes, has 6 birds and a pot of flowers mixed into the utilitarian time keeper. It also has a floral vine engraved all around the outer edge, and in the very center of the the inside of the bottom holder piece, there is what can only be called a whimsical decoration of birds and flowers circling a dense floral field. The incredible hand detailed engraving is accented with black enamel-like material, similar to fine Spanish damascene work. There is some wear to the black enamel.

Every piece in this astrolabe is handmade, from the most intricate engraving down to the simple pin that sets in the center. It has a fabulous patina, and does not look like it was ever polished.
