PLEASE HAVE A LOOK AT MY OTHER ITEMS FOR MORE MIDDLE EASTERN / ISLAMIC ITEMS. For sale we have this breathtaking antique late 19th century circular Islamic Damascus tray. The tray dates from late 1800's circa 1890 or so.
It is made from very thick brass which has been inlaid with silver and copper as well as being hand chased too. In the centre of the tray, there is a stunning arabesque geometric motif which greatly resembles the type of geometric motifs found on Mamluk metal ware and even on inlaid wooden pieces. This central motif has been circled by a band of extremely fine Arabic calligraphic thuluth script. The individuals have been magnificently inlaid to the highest standard. Very clean and precise work!
Around this central focus point, there are silver inlaid floral patterns which resemble the petals on a flower, when you look at the tray from far. Mamluk revival pieces were very cleverly designed. You always have to take a step back and look at the overall design. Then focus on the more intricate sections to understand what the artist was trying to create.
These really are a true work of art! There are further bands of Arabic thuluth script around the edge of the tray as well as geometric arabesque patterns too. The tray has been beautifully hand chased throughout, on the brass surface as well as the silver inlay too. You really have to see this tray to appreciate the magnificent quality and beauty of it. The diameter of the tray is 30cm = 11.8 inches.
The tray is in very good condition overall. Some small losses to the inlay work in places, but nothing major. Please see the photos shown above.
