Turned and dovetailed antique brass or bronze cylindrical box with intricate inlaid silver and copper decoration including cartouche with Arabic script, birds, interlacing arabesques, and Persian botah. Probably crafted during the 19th century Mamluk revival, though possibly older. The box is lined, probably with tin, and when opened releases an intoxicating fragrance; it was clearly used to store incense or some kind of sweet smelling resin. 5 1/2" diameter, 3 1/4" in height.
