The technique of silver and copper inlay was revived in the late 1700's and 1800's in the Islamic world. The process is difficult and requires several stages of mastery. Indeed after the item has been cast or hammered into shape it is then covered in the calligraphy and patterns. After this difficult stage the brass/bronze is carved & engraved by hand. Finally the silver and copper is hammered into the carved areas. This is a beautiful tray which is an early form of cairoware and is probably from Damascus. This style of thinner wire silver inlay was symbolic of the early Revival inlay technique in the bazaars of Cairo and Damascus. A nice heavy tray with fantastic work and good quality fine brass engravings. Please see all the 12 ENLARGED pictures.
