Finest Islamic Tray Silver Inlay Mamluk Cairoware Bordered Arabic Calligraphy

Islamic Brass Tray Inlaid with Silver & Copper Adorned with Rare Copper Bordered Silver Calligraphy , Central Thick silver work with Birds, Surrounded by Three Calligraphic Cartouches , All against a background of Superbly Engraved Foliates , Flowers Interlaced geometric patterns and detailed with Arabesques and Repetitive Patterns. Absolutely stunning work on the background brass too!!

A Must for Collectors Of Cairoware , Mamluk Revival , Persian & Islamic Art in General. The technique of silver and copper inlay was revived in the late 1700's and 1800's in the Islamic world. The process is difficult and requires several stages of mastery. Indeed after the item has been cast or hammered into shape it is then covered in the calligraphy and patterns.

After this difficult stage the brass/bronze is carved & engraved by hand. Finally the silver and copper is hammered into the carved areas. This has the rarer silver large calligraphic cartouches which in turn are surrounded with copper wire. This is a very rare form of metal inlay and is usually done on some of the best pieces.

Although also done by the master silversmiths of Cairo, this type of work was usually done in Damascus. If you are a collector of silver inlaid pieces you will have noticed that the larger trays are becoming very scarce indeed. This tray is 40cm and is much bigger than the usual 32cm ones you find with this fine style of work so do not miss this! THIS IS A HEAVY TRAY!!
