This is an assemblage of two Persian miniature paintings from the 17th century Safavid era. The first one is a miniature painting of a battle scene, supposedly between Persians and Indians, taken as a folio from a 17th century Persian manuscript. It depicts a fictional Persian King under a banner with the name of the Shiat's fist Imam, Imam Ali, negotiating with an Indian King riding an elephant, while the two armies are engaged in one-on-one battles. The second one is part of the opening page of a copy of a very famous Persian book, Layla & Majnun, by the great Persian poet and scholar Nizami Ganjavi (1141--1209). It is a very good, high quality example of the art of Tazhib in Persian and Islamic manuscripts where gilded and colorful floral and other kinds of abstract designs were used to decorate the margins and the opening pages of different chapters of books and manuscripts.

Both pieces, after being cut out from the manuscripts that they belonged to, were glued to an antique European paper-mache board with beautiful ornamental design, some time in the 19th century. The framing seems to be more recent though, probably early to mid 20th century. The frame is still in very good condition, however when I bought this item few years ago, the covering glass was already broken.

If I get a chance I will post photos of the frame too. SIZE: About 11" 1/4 X 17 1/2" , with the frame.
