Greek / Ottoman Cartridge Box Palaska C. A good quality Greek Palaska cartridge box in heavy cast silver with pin-hinged lid and belt loop to the back. Classic motif with figure of Athena the Goddess of War clutching floral cornucopias, representing the bounty of victory. The lid set with an openwork panel incorporating a pair of facing dragons and central shell. The sides with flag splay trophies and foliage.
It has a hinge pin lid with a latch tab closure. The back of the lid has a small missing piece. The decoration is profusely detailed.
While it has a few dents and dings, small holes, and some minor scratches from use and care, it is a nice usable piece for display or wear. It is an elegant antique, and great for numerous collections. Greece declared independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1821 and achieved it eight years later, followed by continued war to preserve it's independence.
