The technique of silver and copper inlay was revived in the late 1700's and 1800's in the Islamic world. The process is difficult and requires several stages of mastery.

Indeed after the item has been cast or hammered into shape it is then covered in the calligraphy and patterns. After this difficult stage the brass/bronze is carved & engraved by hand. Finally the silver and copper is hammered into the carved areas. This stunning tray was made in Damascus in the early 1900's. This tray has around 0.5 kg of Silver used on it!!!

This thick and wide type of silver inlay technique is called Reesh in Arabic. These types of trays with Reesh work were made for wealthy households and patrons. A lot of silver was used to show the wealth of the owners. Reesh work was also used on items given as dowry in Syrian weddings and again the ostentatious look of the tray was to convey wealth and splendour. A beautiful decorative stunning piece.

Please also look at the work on the brass. Please see all the ENLARGED pictures. Condition-wise the tray is good condition. 16 inches (40 cm) diameter. Please look at all pictures to truly appreciate the beauty of this item!
