For sale we have this beautiful large antique Qajar papier mache qalamdan (pen box) dating from the 19th century. The qalamdan is larger than the usual examples you see. It has the more unique rectangular shape too. The lid and the four sides have been painted with scenes portraying multiple figures, the majority of whom on horses, while they hunt deer it seems. This is a charming example of a 19th century Qajar qalamdan with beautiful scenes.

The underside of the lid has a gilt finish while the base once had some decorative patterns, but was worn and restored to some extent. The length of the qalamdan is 27.5cm. The width of each panels is 6.3cm = 2.5 inches. The width of each panels is 5.2cm = 2 inches. The qalamdan is in good condition with very minor wear and areas of restoration.
