Large Stone With Early Form of Writing Carved Into It Middle Eastern Display
For sale is this awesome large stone with an early form of writing on it. The stone itself is heavy and solid. It almost looks like it was chipped off of a larger piece, as the bottom is rough, and the top is smooth (see photos).
The top portion has characters carved into it in an early writing form (ancient language). The writing is one sided, but curves slightly with the curvature of the stone. This piece originally came from the middle east.
After close inspection, I believe that this piece is likely modern. Of course the rock itself is old, but after looking at it under a jewelers loop, the writing looks to be recently done. The edges are firm and sharp without the wear that you would expect from an ancient piece (which would be worn much more smooth). The hazyness of the interior of the carved letters is made by tiny scratches (as from a bit of some kind).
Were it to be ancient, I would expect these to be worn smooth, and in one fluid motion (as with metal) rather than a bit. The letters are also crudely done, and the piece lacks the strong provenance that I typically look for in an item (I only know that it came from the middle east, into a private far eastern collection, and then to the US not any information about the collections, or anything confirmable). For these reasons and more, I personally believe that this piece was made since modern tools have been around. I was not made with ancient tooling, and so must be modern or poorly restored by modern pieces. It still would make a great teaching tool, display piece, conversation piece, collectible, or gift! Be sure to check over the details and look at all of the photos so you will know exactly what youll get! Sometimes the photos include a picture of the item next to a ruler so that you can better tell the size of the item. This way we can avoid any accidental sizing issues. My goal is to make you happy!
