Lot of 3 ANTIQUE DOLLS 19th CENTURY MIDDLE EASTERN withDOCUMENTING INFORMATION
15" Tall while the 3rd is about 12" tall. WOMAN DOLL: The woman doll is approx. 17 tall from her feet to the top of her hat. 4 across from hand to hand. Her clothes appear to be in good condition (considering their age).
No immediately visible holes, but the clothes quite stained & soiled, again based on age they are in my opinion excellent. She has a velvet robe (showing some wear spots), the rest of her clothes are a cloth material. The hat according to the letter is called a TANTOOR, it is almost precisely like those tin horns, which are often used by hunters to call their dogs.You can read more in the photo of the letter. The Tantoor does need some repair as it is loose on the back & tends to fall forward. Her face has some cracks but is still entirely in tact. TALL MAN DOLL He stands approx. 15 tall & is approx.
6 from hand to hand. He is wearing a velvet type coat that is not missing much of the felt, but has an abundant amount of small "worm or moth holes" His pants Top & Hat appear to also be complete, but the pants have some small holes also, but not as many as the coat. His hand painted face is in excellent condition & has very few cracks, especially compared to the woman doll. 9 1/2 DOLL This doll without the stand is much shorter, standing approx. 9 1/2 tall & is approx. 4 from hand to hand. Her clothes are in much better condition, showing no holes or rips.The black cloth hanging from her face, is a mask to cover her face (as is the custom with Muslim Women). The face also appears to be hand painted & is in excellent condition. She even still has both of her earrings, hanging from her ears.
It came off but there are some black pieces of thread still attached to the small lady doll. STANDS: The 3 stands (probably made much later as I don't think they are at all original), are wooden & the sticks come off of the bases. The smaller doll's stand is still firmly attached, but the other 2 will have to be reassembled. DOCUMENTATION: The Excerpt, I rec'd with the dolls was written by Rev.
& is dated 1839, & was from Letters on Palestine and Egypt Written during 2 years residence. It describes the tall doll, in detail. I do not know if there were additional papers documenting the other 2 dolls. They were most likely lost in the last 80 or so years. I have made a copy of this paperwork, which may make it easier to read in a photo.Please read this paperwork carefully, I found them quite interesting. These dolls came from an estate of a family named Black. The family heirlooms & items from the late 1700's to the early 20th century. The family members ranged from Congressmen to Judges, Members of the Military (Dating from the Civil War thruish American War), & members of our WWI & WWII Spy & Secret Service.
These dolls would make a great addition to any serious Doll or Middle Eastern Artifact Collector. I was surprised to find this nice & rare of an item outside of a museum.
