Probably had a metal plate there at one time to go with the metal washer still remaining. Missing its ferrule at the base of the grip. This is why the nice steel guard is loose and wiggles.
Would be much tighter if ferrule was still present. Interesting and nice French blade with VIVE LE ROI on one side and the opposite side with 3 fleur de lis and some additional markings. The blade with a groove along the spine and then a shallow fuller with beveled edge. Blade sports a clipped point.
Blade has oxidation, some patches of pitting and is slightly bent. This is most obvious when you sight it down the spine. Could be straightened and displays fine as is. A nice 19th century nimcha. Please view my other auctions for a great variety of swords, daggers, clubs and tribal art.
