Very scarce and seldom encountered 19th century Turkish officer's saber of European manufacture for the Ottoman market, having very well built large brass mounted hilt with gold gilt finish now showing average wear consistent with the age, open work guard with a large half-moon symbol, further having a bull horn grip with all original brass wire wrapping just slightly out of place but mostly intact and an absolutely wonderful large gold threaded tassel and knot wrapped around the lower grip and openings of the guard, the finial of the guard bearing a struck hallmark with a matching marking at the ricasso of the blade. Wearing a curved large fullered blade which exhibits heavy brownish patina to one side and lighter grayish patina to another side, ricasso struck with a maker's mark identical to the one on the guard's finial. Solid overall, comes with a period iron scabbard in heavy patina which may or may not be native to the sword.
Rare saber, not too often we can see such pattern of the Ottoman officer's regalia, must have been specially made for a higher ranking officer of the Turkish Army. Overall 40 1/2" in scabbard and 36 1/2" without. The item "Scarce 19th C. European made Ottoman Turkish Officer's Sword + Tassel (Shamshir)" is in sale since Wednesday, March 08, 2017.
