Marsh Arab Iraq silver niello ashtray. Many types of items were produced, especially for British service personnel between the 1920's and 1940's.

The nielloed work featured on this example is of particularly fine quality and depicts various river craft plying their trade on the river euphrates, date palms, camel caravans and the incredible ancient ruins of Ctesiphon. The images are all very evocative of old Iraq.
