Stunning 19th C. Indo-Persian Gilt Repousse Bowl Tazza Lion Hunt

Stunning pedestal dish or tazza, possibly for fruit or for religious offering. India or Persia, 19th century or earlier. Decorated with deep repousse and chased scenes of an imperial lion hunt, with marvelous lions, horned deer, birds, hunters, and a beautiful hound in a fancy collar.

Tazza is in two parts. The bowl appears to be gilt copper; the rich rosy gold color is difficult to capture in photos.

The shallow bowl is hollow and sounds like it is filled with sand to lend weight. The bowl is made to screw onto the tall slender foot, which appears to be cast and chased brass or gilt bronze. The effect of the warm gold color and the depth and detail of the scenes is a lavish richness. In pleasing contrast to the heavily worked exterior, the interior is smooth, ornamented only with an engraved floral band near the rim. In height, 9 1/2 24.1 cm.
