Superb 16th / 18th Century Islamic Calligraphy Tile panel Mosque North Africa

This is a stunning panel of six tiles believed to date from 16th - 18th Century, which had originally been made for a Mosque in Marrakesh Morocco, although it is possible that the tiles themselves could have been made to order in Fez which was famous for this very specialist type of incised calligraphy work during that period. I have been told that they were rescued when the building either collapsed or required rebuilding in the early to mid 20th century. All tiles are of the original set and may have been removed in one piece as traditionally these tiles were often cemented together before being put in place in the wall.

The foliage decoration in the upper corners borrows heavily from Iznik designs of the same period and this lovely piece has been carefully preserved and protected from the elements so that it has not suffered the pollution and weather damage often seen on antique architectural tiles. The other four appear to be undamaged apart from the usual wear and tear of age. For this reason i will not remove the panel from the frame in which it came to me.

(a professional restorer would be able to secure this in a way that would be virtually invisible). This is such a beautiful panel in the classic green glaze of the period which is much rarer than the black glaze more usually seen on this type of work.
