Superb Persian Paper Mâché Pen Box (Qalamdan) Signed-Dated 1846-Islamic/Turkish
This is a superb mid 19th century Persian lacquered paper mâché pen box or Qalamdan with paintings, gold decorations and calligraphy on all sides. On the front side of the case there is a miniature painting depicting a battle scene, supposedly the battle of Chalderan, which occurred between the forces of the Persian Safavid king, Shah Ismael I, and the Ottomans, in 1514. Also there are hunting scenes painted on the sides of the cover, depicting horsemen in Qatar garment, and wild animals. The bottom of the case is painted red, and decorated with floral motifs in gold. There is also an old British import stamp attached to the bottom. There are calligraphic inscriptions in Persian on the drawer part of the box, describing and praising the accessories and the tools needed for calligraphy.
There is also a signature and a date that reads "month of Safar, 1262" which coincides with February, 1846. SIZE: About 9 1/4" X 1 3/4" X 1 1/2.
