The chest plate is covered with decoration both inlaid and incised. The raised pecks have Arabic inscriptions. There is also Arabic inscriptions under the trident. The rest of the surface is covered with floral devices and vines. There is concrete evidence on this shield of the interaction between the Persian and Indian cultures on this breast plate.
The trident is strictly Indian at this point in history. In Hindu legends and stories Shiva. God who holds a trident in his hand, uses this sacred weapon to fight off negativity in the form of evil villains. The trident is also said to represent three gunas mentioned in Indian vedic philosophy namely sattvika, rajaska and tamasika. The rest of the decoration is all Persian and Persian influenced. The back of the breast plate has been fitted with much later straps and padding. I think most likely sometime in the 20th century. It is in excellent condition and in an aged patina. Originally this would have been highly polished.
A very elegant and I think quite rare item. Please see the photos as this is an important part of the description. Please see my other listings for a shield out of this same estate.
