Vintage Middle Eastern Hand Carved Carnelian Or Agate Intaglio Pendant Seal
For sale is this beautiful carnelian or agate pendant from the middle east. The stone in this pendant is what is known as an intaglio. Intaglios were historically as seals or signets.
This piece was likely intended to be used as a stamp, for a wealthy owner to press its stamp into clay or hot wax as a sort of symbol or signature. The stone used appears to be carnelian, agate, cut glass, or a similar material.
It is mounted in a round metal ring, so that it can be worn as a pendant. It is not ancient or medieval, as the carveings texture shows that it was made with a modern metal bit. The metal portion also has welds at the top. And finally, it is too slick on the outer part, which is inconsistant with older known examples. I personally believe that this is a modern piece that was just made in an ancient or medieval style.This is a beautiful piece and would look great on display, or as a piece of jewelry!
